Not to date myself or anything, but many many moons ago (that sounds better than years) I made filet doilies with my mother. I read somewhere recently that doilies are making a come back. Shocking, I know! I'm sure that the instructions came out of a crochet magazine from many many moons ago, but I have no idea which one. I only have a copy, given to my by my mother.
This is an example of the letters we created on graph paper.
